E.ggtimer to Track and Organize Time

Computer has taken over the function of many gadgets like music player and television, and if you have an old broken laptop - door stop. E.ggtimer.com is a website providing a service seeking to replace the function of yet another item - the kitchen timer.

For a PhD student who spends a lot of time on a laptop with constant internet connection, E.ggtimer.com provides a quick way to set timers. Why might one do this?
  • You are in the middle of reading a paper and need to catch a school shuttle in 20 minutes.
  • You are in the middle of surfing the web and need to get back to work real soon.
  • You are in the middle of data analysis and need to take a break every so often.
The counter counts down the time in the tab (see picture), and ends with a sound alert and a popup (which is useful if you muted the sound in the library)

Using keywords in Firefox, I can quickly set a timer by switching over to the web brower, and type in the address bar: et 10 minutes. (which expands to http://e.ggtimer.com/10%20minutes by Firefox)

If you are not familiar with keywords in Firefox, you use this feature by creating a bookmark with a keyword:

  1. Open the bookmark pane. (Ctrl+B)

  2. Right click inside the bookmark pane and select "New Bookmark".

  3. Fill in the following information (see picture).

  4. Save changes.
